Dominican Republic with Satellite-Supported National Alert System

Santo Domingo, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) announced that the National Alert System, currently in its testing phase, will rely on a satellite component to ensure that emergency messages reach the entire population.

The measure will allow alerts to be transmitted to citizens’ cell phones, even in the most remote areas, through telecommunications companies authorized to offer satellite services in the country.

According to Indotel, a group of satellite providers, along with traditional telecommunications concessionaires, are in the process of formalizing alliances to launch this additional service.

It was reported that it will function as technological support within the National Alert System.

The institution explained that, if an emergency occurs in a distant area, the system will be able to send out the message via satellite and have it delivered directly to the affected person’s cell phone.

The Dominican government successfully conducted the first technical test on September 9.

The new tool will allow mass, immediate, and geolocated emergency messages to be delivered to the population’s cell phones, safeguarding human lives.

This project has the support of Indotel, the National Emergency and Security Response System 9-1-1, the National Police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Emergency Operations Center (COE), in coordination with other state entities.
