Quang Tri province remembers Fidel Castro’s visit

Hanoi, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) Fifty-two years after the visit of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the Quang Tri province stands out for its valuable contribution to the campaign to support Cuba launched by the Vietnam Red Cross Society.

In just one month, this central Vietnamese province raised more than 9.134 billion dong (about 360,000 dollars), the highest amount in the country received through the regional aid channels provided by the humanitarian social organization.

The significant fundraising results achieved in such a short time are clear proof of the deep sentiment of the people of Quang Tri, and Vietnam in general, toward Cuba, a loyal and affectionate friend, Mai Thi Kim Nhung, President of the Red Cross Society in Quang Tri, stated on social media.

Kim Nhung also highlighted that many residents from remote places and ethnic minorities traveled long distances to the communes to make their donations, “a gesture that demonstrates the loyalty and solidarity of the residents of Quang Tri with the Cuban people in a time of hardship.”

In his first visit to a Vietnam still in the throes of war, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro insisted on defying all dangers and traveling to the liberated zone to meet with the combatants of the National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Provisional Revolutionary Government (PRG) in South Vietnam.

In his hardly acclaimed 40-minute address, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution reviewed the struggles of the Vietnamese people since President Ho Chi Minh declared independence on September 2, 1945.

Fidel Castro’s historic and momentous visit to Quang Tri was the first and only visit by a head of State to the liberated territories of South Vietnam following the signing of the Paris Agreement.
