Argentine unions support university students returning to the streets

Buenos Aires, Sept 16 (Prensa Latina) Argentine unions expressed their support for the march of university students, medical personnel, and retirees toward Congress, while students and professors returned to teaching in the streets against the presidential veto.

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the two Argentine Workers’ Unions (CTA), along with the State Workers’ Association (ATE), expressed that they will be present at what is expected to be a massive drive against President Javier Milei’s rejection of the laws on pediatric healthcare funding and the operation of public universities. In a statement, the CGT expressed its “strongest rejection” of the executive branch’s vetoes of these laws, which were approved by Congress.

“Just as he did weeks ago with the Emergency Disability Act and the pension laws, the President once again resorted to vetoes to prevent the implementation of two important initiatives that seek to guarantee the protection and sustainability of funding for public university education and the right to health for children and adolescents,” the union federation emphasized.

The CGT maintained that “health and public education are fundamental pillars for the country’s progress and development” and confirmed that it will support Wednesday’s mobilization to Congress when the Chamber of Deputies will debate the president’s vetoes. Previously, the two CTAs and ATE also reaffirmed their support for university students, doctors, and retirees.

The leaders of the State Workers’ Union even called for a general strike tomorrow.

On Monday, with public classes on the steps of the Law School and other central locations in Buenos Aires, protests expanded against the current head of the Casa Rosada’s reluctance to provide the necessary allocations for the university budget, which has been frozen since last year.

Institutions in other cities across the country also implemented similar measures.
