South Africa: Respect the safety of the Flotilla to Gaza

Pretoria, Sept 16 (Prensa Latina) South Africa joined the Joint Declaration of 16 countries concerned about the safety of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which delivers humanitarian aid to Gaza and seeks to raise awareness about the need to halt the Israeli aggression.

In the text signed by Pretoria, the foreign ministers of Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Ireland, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey expressed concern for the safety of the participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian initiative comprised of citizens of those countries.

The flotilla’s mission is to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip and draw attention to the pressing humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people and the urgency of ending the armed conflict in that region, the text states.

The foreign ministers agree on the importance of respecting international law, including humanitarian law, and that the goals of peace and aid delivery are shared by their governments.

In this context, they call for refraining from any illegal or violent acts against the flotilla.

Furthermore, they emphasize that any violations of the participants’ human rights and international law, such as attacks on vessels in international waters or illegal detentions, will be held accountable.

The Global Sumud Flotilla mission has a history of similar civil activism movements seeking to break the blockade imposed on Gaza, considered by many international entities to be a violation of humanitarian law due to its negative impact on the civilian population.

This maritime operation carries vital supplies such as food, medicine, and medical supplies, and includes the participation of hundreds of activists from different countries.
