Argentine’s president threatens thousands of layoffs for overturning

Buenos Aires, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) Javier Milei's Casa Rosada (government) reacted by threatening thousands of layoffs in the public sector and cuts to social security funds and even Congressional funding for overturning the executive branch's vetoes.

Yesterday, the Chamber of Deputies, in historic votes, overturned the presidential vetoes on the funding laws for pediatric healthcare and public universities. It also established a commission to investigate the mega-scam involving the fake $Libra cryptocurrency promoted by the president and advanced the investigation into the scandal involving alleged bribery in the Presidency.

The Senate also approved the promotion of the Senate bill to limit the president’s power to issue Decrees of Necessity and Urgency, and the Senate is preparing to enact legislation to distribute among the provinces the funds they are entitled to from the National Treasury Contributions that the executive branch has withheld.

Spokesperson Manuel Adorni stated this afternoon that “what the national representatives voted yesterday is horrendous,” referring to the rejection of the vetoes of the Pediatric Emergency and University Financing laws.

He objected that Congress “responded with demagoguery” because it seems “not to care about the efforts made by the people” to “maintain” fiscal balance and “an Argentina with a future.”

In what union leader Oscar Veron interpreted as pressure, Adorni said that in order to allocate the funds for the operation of the universities, “66,550 public employees would have to be laid off.”

He even went further, threatening to “suspend all social programs for three months,” subsidies for energy services, and cut Congressional appropriations for four months, among other measures.
