Assembly President: UN must adapt to current challenges

United Nations, Sept 18 (Prensa Latina) Eighty years after its founding, the United Nations (UN) must evolve and adapt to face today's major challenges, the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, said.

At a press conference, Baerbock stressed the importance of reflecting, rebuilding, and demonstrating that the UN remains relevant in the current context.

Referring to the high-level debate of the 80th session, scheduled for next week, she noted that it is a space for Member States to analyze and respond together to the desperate calls for peace in places like Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and Haiti.

Other major collective challenges, including climate change, inequality, and rapid technological advances, also require unity to be overcome, she commented.

She also considered it necessary to renew and modernize the UN, ensuring that it remains a place of debate and dialogue, and that it remains strong “for the next 80 years.”

Among the priorities of the exchanges, she highlighted advancing the UN80 initiative, created to streamline operations, improve impact, and reaffirm the organization’s relevance; guiding the selection of the next Secretary-General; and ensuring the implementation of the Compact for the Future.
