Syria announces possible progress in security contacts with Israel

Damascus, Sept 18 (Prensa Latina) Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara stated that ongoing negotiations with Israel to reach a security agreement could yield concrete results, although he ruled out any peace or normalization process with Tel Aviv for the time being.

In statements to the press published by Syria TV, the president described the eventual agreement as a “strategic necessity” that would guarantee respect for Syria’s airspace and territorial integrity, under United Nations supervision.

Al-Shara emphasized that the security agreement would not imply diplomatic normalization or political relations with Israel, and noted that the United States is not currently pressuring Damascus to reach a comprehensive pact.

If we achieve a security agreement, we could explore other agreements in the future, the Syrian president added.

The president revealed that last July, Syria and Israel were close to finalizing a security agreement, but unrest in Sweida province thwarted the process.

He also considered it “premature” to discuss the future of the Syrian Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967, and warned that Israeli actions contradict Washington’s statements supporting a “stable and unified” Syria.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani recently met in London with his Israeli counterpart for Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer.

Israeli diplomatic sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the presence of the US special envoy for Syria, Thomas Barak, at the meeting.
