Uruguay: Fenedur, another company to leave the country

Montevideo, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) The adhesive manufacturer Fenedur will join other foreign firms closing their doors in Uruguay and moving their production to other countries, this time to Argentina.

Fenedur produces popular adhesives such as La Gotita and Novopren, but will close its plant in Uruguay on October 31, reported the Confederation of Industrial Unions (CSI).

The decision will affect about 40 people working at the factory located in the department of Canelones. The company’s decision was confirmed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

In response to the announcement, the CSI denounced “once again, the serious situation our national industry is facing, with the resulting plant closures and the loss of hundreds of jobs.”

The union announced that it is “on alert” and demands “immediate, urgent, and concrete measures from the stakeholders involved to reverse this extremely serious situation.”

La Gotita was created in Argentina in the 1960s by the Alba company, but over time the brand passed into the hands of Henkel, the German multinational headquartered in Düsseldorf.

Other companies have left Uruguay, such as the American communications company Verizon; the Japanese auto parts supplier Yazaki; previously Fanacif, owned by the Brazilian company Frasle Mobility, which stopped producing components for brake systems; and Gloria Foods, part of the Gloria Group of Peru (2014), for dairy production.

The withdrawal of these companies has increased the number of unemployed workers.
