Chilean candidate Jara leads in first round but falls in second round

Santiago, Chile, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) The presidential candidate for the Unidad por Chile coalition, Jeannette Jara, will lead in the first round of elections, but still trails her closest rivals in the second round, according to a poll published today.

According to the Signos poll, Jara would obtain 28.3 percent in the November 16 elections, followed by Jose Antonio Kast of the far-right Republican Party (25.4 percent) and Evelyn Matthei of the traditional right (13.8 percent).

However, in the runoff, the candidate backed by the leftist, progressive, and social democratic parties, plus the Christian Democrats, would lose to the two conservative candidates by a margin of 10 points, according to the poll.

In terms of regions, Jara dominates in the Metropolitan Region (RM) (34.8 percent) and in the central zone (32.9); Kast leads in the south (30) and in the north (25.9), and Matthei performs best in the RM (19.5).

The poll also measured preferences by age group: the representative of the ruling parties is most popular among young people (31 percent) and those over 65 (34.1 percent).

Kast dominates among those aged 35 to 49 (31.7 percent), while Matthei’s strength lies among those aged 35 to 64 (36 percent).
