South Africa and Brazil agree on agricultural collaboration

Pretoria, Sept 19 (Prensa Latina) The governments of South Africa and Brazil signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) that opens a new chapter in bilateral agricultural cooperation, with an emphasis on sustainability and food security.

The agreement was signed by South African Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen and Brazilian Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Luiz De Alcantara Rua during the G20 Agricultural Working Group ministerial meeting, currently underway in Somerset West, in the southern province of Western Cape.

In Steenhuisen’s words, the MoI represents “more than a formal partnership; it is a demonstration of our shared vision for a food-secure future,” which combines strengths to ease technological innovations and promote a more resilient agricultural sector for the benefit of both peoples.

The non-binding document that establishes a framework for intensifying the exchange of technical knowledge, conducting study visits, training programs, and joint meetings, also provides the sharing of good practices in sustainable agriculture, livestock systems, and quality assurance to protect both consumers and products.

The cooperation also includes strategic trade facilitation through trade missions and fairs that will open new markets for agricultural products from both countries.

Agricultural trade relations between South Africa and Brazil grew by 80.5 percent between 2020 and 2024. South African exports to Brazil increased by 92.8 percent, with products such as seeds, spirits, wines, and dried grapes leading the list.

A Joint Working Group will also be established to define priority areas and develop a detailed plan for their implementation, ensuring effective monitoring aligned with the strategic interests of both countries.
