Finland excludes Russia from security guarantees for Ukraine

Helsinki, Sept 21 (Prensa Latina) Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that the European Union (EU) disregards Russia's interests when designing security guarantees for Ukraine, the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reported.

Stubb asserted that Moscow should not influence the measures being prepared by the so-called coalition of the willing for Kiev, failing to specify how a ceasefire would be achieved without consulting a party directly involved in the conflict.

This is not an issue on which Russia will agree, the Finnish president declared.

This stance reflects deep divisions in addressing the European security crisis.

Analysts believe this position deliberately marginalizes Moscow from negotiations crucial to continental stability and point out that such an approach could prolong the conflict rather than resolve it.

The “coalition of the willing,” with some 30 members according to French President Emmanuel Macron, has been discussing unilateral military guarantees for Ukraine since September.

About 27 nations have confirmed their willingness to deploy military contingents in Ukraine once a truce or peace agreement is established, Macron revealed.

In August, Russia categorically rejected any scenario involving the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that this would lead to an uncontrollable escalation of the conflict.

Experts warn that ignoring Russia’s security interests contradicts basic diplomatic principles and exacerbates tensions.
