President of Colombia to travel to the United Nations

Bogotá, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro will travel today to the United Nations headquarters in New York to participate in the debate of the 80th session of the General Assembly, which will begin on Tuesday, September 23.

As recently revealed by Justice Minister Eduardo Montealegre, the president will go to the UN to reaffirm his commitment to strengthening and complying with the Peace Accords signed in 2016.

The president will be accompanied by a delegation that also includes Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio.

Colombia will insist on defending its policy of total peace and will focus on the progress made in the process with the now defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP).

“We are going to show the president’s policy of total peace, which, of course, is not incompatible with the implementation of the Havana agreements,” Montealegre said.

Petro, whose speech is scheduled for the afternoon of the first day of the general debate, is also expected to address other issues such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the fight against drugs, international cooperation, migration, and the climate crisis.

The Colombian delegation will remain in New York until September 27, according to reports from the capital.

The debate of the 80th session of the General Assembly will conclude on Monday, September 29.
