Ebola surveillance increases in DRC province

Kinshasa, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) Surveillance and care for people in contact with cases of the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are currently increasing in the affected health zone in Kasai province.

The World Health Organization (WHO) informed that more than 90 percent of the 943 people in contact with infected or suspected cases are currently being monitored in the Bulape health zone, the epicenter of the epidemic.

Meanwhile, 16 patients are receiving care in 34 beds, and two people have been discharged from the treatment center, the health organization added.

The outbreak of the Zaire strain of Ebola virus was officially declared on September 4 and has since affected 14 localities in the Bulape area, with 48 reported cases, 38 of which were confirmed, and 31 deaths.

In response to this phenomenon, health authorities and partners, such as the WHO, are developing a containment plan that includes immunization with the Ervebo vaccine, which has been administered to more than 500 people, including frontline personnel and contacts of suspected patients.
