Mothers Against War confronts the militarization of Puerto Rico

San Juan, Sept 22 (Prensa Latina) Mothers Against War movement intensified their fight to stop US militarism in Puerto Rico, from where it intends to attack Caribbean nations, particularly Venezuela. “On this International Day of Peace, we demand justice,” said Sonia Santiago Hernandez, spokesperson for the Puerto Rican organization, as she led a protest in the city of Ceiba, where the U.S. Navy has stationed a dozen of F-35 aircraft, at the former Roosevelt Roads naval base, which was closed as a result of the struggle to halt military practices in Vieques, which ended in 2003.

The activist stressed that “as mothers and relatives of military personnel, we stressed that wars bring chaos, destruction, and death.”

“It jurts that from the lands stolen from Puerto Rico by the US armed forces other sister nations have been invaded, such as Guatemala in 1954, the Dominican Republic in 1965, Grenada in 1983, and Panama in 1989, all bloody wars,” said Santiago Hernandez.

She remembered that in Panama, during that aggression, more than 4,000 people died, which is why it is important “not to say that there is a single Puerto Rican soldier willing to invade any sister country, including Venezuela.”
