Thousands of Palestinians remain missing in Syria, report reveals

Damascus, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) More than 5,000 Palestinians remain missing since the start of the war in 2011, according to a recent report by the Action Group for Palestinians in Syria.

The document, titled “The Sorrowful Harvest,” points out that by last year end, 5,370 people were reported missing, including 5,177 men and 193 women, most of them residing in Palestinian refugee camps within the country.

Data note that Yarmouk Camp, south of Damascus, has the highest number of cases, with 1,182 missing people, followed by Khan Al-Shih, south of the capital, with 471.

The Action Group urged the immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of the detainees, allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross access to the detention centers, and holding those responsible for enforced disappearances accountable, including reparations for the affected families.

The organization warned that this is one of the worst crimes of enforced disappearance in the modern era and urgently called on the international community to take concrete measures in light of the scale of the scourge.

Figures updated through August 2025 report 181,312 people detained or disappeared during 14 years of war in Syria, including 5,332 minors and 9,201 women.

The Action Group for Palestinians had revealed that more than 4,000 Palestinian refugees lost their lives during more than a decade of war.
