According to Isidro Fraga Hurtado, director of CEEMA, who spoke to Prensa Latina, “Our research provides solutions to the national energy efficiency program and the introduction of renewable energy sources”.
“For example, he added, we develop models for predicting solar photovoltaic power, which are very useful for managing systems with high renewable penetration, given the growing integration of solar photovoltaic.”
The Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, that is affiliated with the Carlos Rafael Rodriguez School of Engineering at the University of Cienfuegos, is an internationally recognized leader in the energy and environmental field in Cuba, with a highly qualified scientific and academic team committed to local development and the Sustainable Development Goals. “CEEMA is closely linked to the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), especially in projects related to Energy Efficiency.
As a result of these projects, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) recently recognized our Master’s program in Energy Efficiency with the OLADE Award for Energy Excellence 2025,” Fraga Hurtado noted.
CEEMA is also involved in national projects with the Institute of Hydraulic Resources, the Institute of Meteorology, and the National Load Dispatch (Despacho Nacional de Carga) in electricity generation forecasting.
“Our research center always seeks to promote the principles of energy and environmental sustainability in Cuba and we promote solutions that can serve as examples of good practices. We implement some of these at our own university. That’s why we have now opted for international “Green Campus” status through the use of renewable energy,” Fraga Hurtado stated.
