Cuban writer receives Literary Merit Award from Guatemala

Havana, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) Cuban writer, historian, and poet Delio Orozco receives the Jose Joaquin Palma Literary Merit Award in Guatemala in recognition of his work, the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) highlighted.

The awarding event, in addition to highlighting Orozco’s career and strengthening ties between Cuba and Guatemala, showcases an authentic musical expression that connects our Latin American roots, UNEAC stated.

The Jose Joaquin Palma Literary Merit Award is granted by the Guatemalan government to outstanding figures of Ibero-American culture.

This gesture reaffirms the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, united by the figure of the Bayamo poet Jose Joaquin Palma, author of the Guatemalan national anthem.

As part of the tribute, the sister nation will offer Cuba an artistic gift: a concert by the Guatemalan musical group Brisas de Hunahpu, which will perform in the gardens of UNEAC.

The group, renowned for its mastery of the marimba, will bring the traditional sounds of Guatemala to this audience in an evening celebrating shared art, the Cuban intellectual organization stated.

Delio Orozco, with more than three decades dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of local heritage, holds a degree in History and has been a specialist at the Manzanillo Historical Archive since 1990.

He is also vice president of UNEAC in Granma province, a member of the Cuban Academy of History, and coordinator of publishing projects such as the Encyclopedia of Manzanillo.
