Debate on healthcare reform expected in Colombia’s Senate

Bogota, Sept 24 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian government expects the Seventh Committee of the Senate to begin debating health care reform, after postponing the debate yesterday due to a lack of quorum.

Health Minister Guillermo Jaramillo is confident that Congress will fulfill its mandate to discuss the proposal, which was filed on April 2 and has yet to be processed.

According to the official’s social media account, the Colombian people are demanding a change in the healthcare system.

“Healthcare reform is for the people, not for the interests of a few. We hope that Congress will fulfill its duty,” he said.

The postponement of the discussion of the initiative caused unease among other government representatives, such as Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, who said that the absence of senators is a sign that they are seeking to sink the bill.

“They quickly sank the labor reform, and now they want to slowly sink the health reform. We will have to call on the people to once again make Congress understand what their needs are.

Health care is not only being manipulated by the Health Promotion Companies but also by some congressmen from the Seventh Committee of the Senate,” Benedetti said.
