Abbas calls for an end to occupation and denounces Israeli crimes

United Nations, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) The Middle East will never know peace until the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank ends, said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.

We want to live in freedom, security, and peace like the rest of the peoples of the world, in an independent and sovereign state within the 1967 borders, the president said while speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in a recorded message following the United States’ refusal to grant him a visa.

It is time for the international community to deliver justice to the Palestinian people, so they can free themselves from the occupation and stop being held hostage to the whims of Israeli politics, which denies our basic rights and continues its injustice and oppression, he emphasized.

In his speech, the Palestinian leader called for an immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid through UN agencies, an end to hunger as a weapon, the release of all hostages and prisoners on both sides, and the complete withdrawal of the army from Gaza.

In this regard, he once again rejected the forced displacement of its inhabitants and defended an international plan for the reconstruction of the coastal enclave, home to more than two million people.

On this subject, he asserted the right of the Palestinian National Authority to govern Gaza, as the world demands, despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection.

This territory is an integral part of the State of Palestine, and we are ready to assume full responsibility for its governance and security, he stated.

Abbas again criticized the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which left more than 1,200 dead there and sparked the aggression against the Gaza Strip, where more than 65,000 deaths have been reported.
