Congo reaffirms support for Palestine and Cuba at UN

Brazzaville, Sept 25 (Prensa Latina) Denis Sassou-N'Guesso, President of the Republic of Congo, reaffirmed his country's support for establishing a Palestinian State and the elimination of the United States' economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which continues sessions in New York, Sassou-N’Guesso reaffirmed his nation’s support for peaceful coexistence, mutual tolerance, and mutual understanding.

In this regard, the president expressed the Congolese stance in favor of a two-state solution: Israeli and Palestinian, coexisting in peace; and alongside the Cuban people, “exhausted by decades of a blockade that is currently incomprehensible,” he noted.

The head of State also reiterated the call for global disarmament and investment in the search for solutions for the collective security, stability, and prosperity of all peoples.

He stated that in the face of growing tensions and multiple threats that jeopardize the future of humanity, the UN must once again become an effective instrument for conflict prevention.

He warned that a new and disturbing arms race, with record global spending, is underway, while millions of people live in extreme poverty and have limited access to clean water, quality education, and primary health care.

“The Republic of Congo firmly believes that a stronger and more effective UN is essential for preserving peace and ensuring sustainable development,” Sassou-N’Guesso said, and called for reform of its bodies, beginning with the Security Council, to make it more representative and transparent.
