Cuba strengthens surveillance, control vs spread of arboviruses

Havana, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is strengthening surveillance and control actions in response to the spread of arboviruses, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).

It notes that the country’s epidemiological situation is currently characterized by the spread of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and other vectors, particularly arboviroses.

These include dengue, endemic in Cuba, and the oropouche virus, introduced last year and which has maintained transmission in several territories, according to a note from the official MINSAP government website.

It was also confirmed that last July the chikungunya virus was the introduced in the province of Matanzas, which has led to the intensification of vector control actions.

In this regard, Dr. Francisco Duran, National Director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), explained that these events are related to the high infestation of Aedes aegypti—the vector of dengue, chikungunya, and oropouche—as well as the presence of midges and Culex mosquitoes, also transmitters of the latter arbovirus.

He emphasized that frequent rains, sanitation problems, and high temperatures favor the proliferation of these insects, increasing the risk of transmission.

He also reiterated that Cuba maintains clinical-epidemiological and laboratory surveillance, with the capacity to diagnose these diseases in a timely manner, and emphasized that “there is no collapse in health services in any territory of the country.”
