Colombia and Panama agreed to strengthen the fight against crime

Bogota, Sept 26 (Prensa Latina) Colombia and Panama agreed to strengthen the fight against crime and criminal organizations operating on the Darien border during a meeting held in northern Cartagena between high-ranking military officials, local media reported.

Both parties decided that air and sea surveillance and intelligence missions will be deployed for six months to identify the relationship between gangs such as the Clan del Golfo and the Panamanian groups Manzana Cero and Mafias Filipinas, W Radio reported.

“We want to see how they are communicating amidst illegality. We have determined that we must identify these leaders,” said the commander of the Colombian Military Forces, Admiral Francisco Cubides, quoted by the news source regarding the joint fight against criminal organizations.

Another of the defined objectives seeks to curb illegal migration in border communities.

According to the Colombian official, all actions aimed at this end will be carried out with respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Panamanian National Border Service, Deputy Commissioner Jhonatan Ali, revealed that this plan is already underway.

The official explained that 21 people were captured a few hours ago 20 kilometers from the border with Colombia.
