German pharmaceutical companies criticize US tariff policy

Berlin, Sept 26 (Prensa Latina) German pharmaceutical companies harshly criticized US President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

The German Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Researchers Association (VFA) noted this Friday that the industry is reacting with harsh criticism to the 100% tariffs on medicines announced by Trump.

It noted in a statement that if the plans are implemented as announced, starting October 1, it would represent a severe setback for the pharmaceutical industry in Germany and Europe.

According to the industry, the announcement contradicts existing trade agreements between the United States and the European Union (EU), which provide for a tariff ceiling of 15%.

They explained that 100% import tariffs would have serious repercussions on international supply chains, make drug production more expensive, and jeopardize supplies to patients, both in the United States and Europe.

For VFA President Han Steutel, they can already see how investments in the sector are freezing.

For the German pharmaceutical industry, with its approximately 130,000 employees, the United States is the most important export country.
