Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina condemned the violence on Friday and called on the population to remain calm amid demonstrations that left an as yet unknown number of people injured.
The protests, which included protests over the lack of various services, including water and electricity, were suppressed by police with tear gas and rubber bullets, leaving at least 10 civilians and three officers injured, while looting of businesses and destruction of property erupted.
According to authorities, the curfew in the capital was imposed the day before and will continue this Friday.
Meanwhile, Rajoelina is in New York participating in the high-level segment of the 80th UN General Assembly.
Meanwhile, local media reported that many of the facilities and homes attacked belonged to senators and other political figures in the country.
