Ports and Canal threats focus week in Panama

Panama City, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) The presentation of port projects and new threats to the neutral character of the Panama Canal marked the week that ends today.

During the commemorative forum of the 20 years of the Participatory Platform of the Canal Basin, its administrator Ricaurte Vazquez, explained that next month begins the first approaches to the market for the construction of a terminal on the Pacific side (Corozal) and another on the Atlantic (Telfers).

It will be a process similar to the one carried out to promote the construction of a gas pipeline with the exchange of 45 companies interested, many of them foreign ones.

The idea of building transshipment terminals around the Canal resurfaced strongly as part of the process of transferring the concession of the ports of Balboa (Pacific) and Cristobal (Atlantic) from the operator CK Hutchison, based in Hong Kong, to a consortium formed by the US fund manager BlackRock and Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), the port arm of the shipping giant MSC, it was reported.

According to press reports, this operation, framed in the global sale of more than 40 ports operated by CK Hutchison for close to 23 billion dollars, has been held up by China in the midst of a geopolitical battle with the United States.
