During the meeting, held at the diplomatic headquarters, officials and family members recalled the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who on September 28, 1960, announced the creation of the CDRs before nearly a million people gathered in front of the then Presidential Palace, now the Museum of the Revolution.
In that speech, Fidel proclaimed the establishment of “a system of collective revolutionary vigilance” in the face of imperialism’s campaigns of aggression.
Those present also heard a message from Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo, national coordinator of the CDRs and a Hero of the Republic, sent to the group from the province of Ciego de Avila, the site of the main event commemorating the anniversary.
The evening concluded with Cuban music and traditional caldosa (soup dish), a dish that accompanies the organization’s celebrations on the island.
