Panama on alert for disease affecting domestic and wild birds

Panama City, Sept 30 (Prensa Latina) Panama's Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) declared a zoosanitary alert due to the presence of infectious laryngotracheitis (ITL), a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects domestic and wild birds.

According to the statement, the outbreak, which poses a risk to the national poultry industry, was detected at a facility in the district of San Francisco, San José district, in the western province of Veraguas.

The statement adds that the facility remains under quarantine, but the resolution indicates measures such as prohibiting the movement of domestic birds, fertile eggs, and hazardous materials from the affected area to the rest of the country.

Other actions include strengthening surveillance and providing police support in case producers resist control.

Poultry producers in areas where LTI is detected and fail to report it to the authorities will also be fined and may even face temporary or permanent farm closures, as well as criminal charges filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The importance of this measure to safeguard the country’s poultry heritage and prevent the spread of the disease, recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) as notifiable, was emphasized.
