Honduras after a historic coffee harvest looks forward higher goals

Tegucigalpa, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Honduras begins a new coffee cycle after achieving historic results in the 2024-2025 harvest, with revenues exceeding $2.2 billion and more than six million quintals sold.

For the next marketing year (2025-2026), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) forecast a 10 percent increase in coffee production, consolidating its position as one of the main drivers of the national economy.

In recent statements to the press, SAG Vice Minister Carlos Murillo announced this increase for the harvest, which begins on October 1, with a production of 7.5 million quintals and the firm goal of reaching 10 million quintals by 2028, he emphasized.

This growth is supported by the National Renewal Plan, state support with resources, the Coffee Bonus, and the adoption of sustainable technology, benefiting more than 120,000 families, Murillo emphasized.

Although definitive figures are pending, Honduras, the largest coffee producer in Central America, third in the Americas, and seventh in the world, has exported more than 6.2 million quintals, with international prices remaining above $300 per quintal.

According to the Undersecretary of Coffee Growing, following the rise in the price of the coffee on the world market, the economy of rural areas and the national economy has strengthened significantly.

The expansion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of this Central American nation depends largely on the coffee sector, according to the Central Bank of Honduras, the official emphasized.

Coffee contributes more than five percent to the global Gross Domestic Product and nearly 30 percent of the agricultural GDP.
