South Africa calls for caution, protection for Global Sumud Flotilla

Pretoria, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) The South African government expressed its deep concern about the situation of the Global Sumud Flotilla, currently sailing in the Mediterranean Sea, and urged all parties involved to act with the utmost caution and respect international law.

In response to reports of unidentified drone activity near civilian vessels, South Africa insisted on the absolute priority of ensuring the safety, physical integrity, and protection of all unarmed participants, including South African citizens.

The Executive Branch reminded the actors involved of their obligation to strictly adhere to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and International Humanitarian Law, warning that any military intervention or enforced detention in international waters would constitute a serious violation of international legal norms and fundamental human rights.

The Sumud Global Flotilla, a peaceful and humanitarian initiative, seeks to highlight the urgent needs of the Palestinian population in Gaza—affected by the Israeli military aggression—and channel essential aid to alleviate their suffering, stated an official statement from the South African Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation.

In a statement, the ministry emphasized that South Africa is deeply concerned by the dramatic humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the deplorable conditions require urgent protection and continued assistance to counter widespread hunger and food insecurity.

Consequently, the South African government called on the international community and all parties involved to fulfill their legal responsibilities and ensure the safe and unhindered passage of humanitarian missions.

Ministerial spokesperson Chrispin Phiri emphasized that South Africa remains steadfast in defending human life and international legal principles, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the dignity and fundamental rights of all involved.
