Georgia’s ruling party wins local elections

Tbilisi, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) The ruling Georgian Dream party won 81,6% of the votes in the local elections held on Saturday, the Central Election Committee (CEC) announced after completing the vote count.

“Georgian Dream won in all 64 municipalities across the country; in addition, pro-government candidates won the mayoralties in several cities, with Kaja Kaladze securing the mayoralty of Tbilisi with 214,872 votes, or 71,58%.

The second-place finish in the capital was opposition candidate Irakli Kupradze, who obtained 12,27%,” the CEC reported.

The main opposition parties, including the United National Movement and the Coalition for Change, boycotted the elections. In the evening, an opposition rally led to clashes with law enforcement.

At least six protesters and 21 police officers were injured in the unrest, according to the Georgian Ministry of Health. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze blamed the violence on the United National Movement (UNM) and called Saturday’s unrest a “failed coup d’état.”

Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili, whose residence protesters attempted to raid on Saturday, attributed the vandalism to “the continued existence of forces operating under the control of foreign intelligence services,” but expressed his conviction that “the people will not allow anyone to change the government through violence.”
