According to the Hungarian leader, Kyiv will not be able to force a change in Budapest’s position through actions he described as blackmail, in response to statements by the Ukrainian president.
Hungary has no moral obligation to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU, the head of government wrote on his X social media account.
Orban recalled that any decision on membership in the European bloc requires the unanimous consensus of all 27 member states.
The Hungarian people have already decided. A large majority of citizens voted against such accession in a referendum, the conservative leader maintained.
Analysts agree that Hungary’s position represents an obstacle to Ukraine’s European aspirations at a critical moment in the conflict.
If this position is to be changed, a media campaign against Hungary may not be the best way to win allies, Orban warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
