A note published on the website of the newspaper Corriere della Sera states that the explosion took place during an evacuation operation at the building, whose three occupants saturated the building with gas to try to prevent police action.

“We had to execute a search warrant, in which we were also looking for Molotov cocktail-type incendiary bombs, and although the carabinieri and the police tried to operate with maximum security and all the necessary equipment, the outcome was unexpected and very painful,” Verona Chief Prosecutor Raffaele Tito told news outlets.

The alleged perpetrators of this tragedy were arrested: two men and a woman in their 60s, local farmers.

They had been subject to an eviction order for a year.

They now face charges of premeditated murder, although the investigation continues.

In October 2024, exactly one year ago, these individuals also filled the rooms with gas to thwart the eviction, while one of the three doused himself with gasoline and threatened to set himself on fire.

Given this situation, the execution of the order was dismissed on that occasion, the prosecutor noted.
