Brazilian FM meets with Marco Rubio in the US on tariffs

Brasilia, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will begin negotiations today in Washington regarding the 50 percent tariffs imposed by the United States on domestic products.

This meeting was confirmed Wednesday by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, marking Teachers’ Day.

The two heads of diplomacy are also expected to discuss the sanctions imposed on Brazilian officials.

The two spoke by phone last week and arranged this in-person meeting.

In a phone call with Lula on October 6, his US counterpart, Donald Trump, designated the Secretary of State to continue negotiations with Brazil.

Lula and Trump met during the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23.

In his speech at the time, the Republican recounted having met Lula briefly during a break between prayers and mentioned that they had agreed to meet.

“I was walking in, and the leader of Brazil was walking out. We saw each other, I saw him, he saw me, and we hugged.

And then I thought, ‘Can you believe I’m going to say this in just two minutes?’ In fact, we agreed to meet next week.

We didn’t have much time to talk, maybe 20 seconds,” the American tycoon recounted.
