DRC: Kabila heads political platform

Kinshasa, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Former Congolese President Joseph Kabila heads a new political platform "Save the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)," even though his country's High Military Court sentenced him to death.

During the conclusion of a conclave of political and social forces on the future of the DRC held in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, the former head of State was appointed to head the organization, which intends to “take measures to end the dictatorship and restore the State’s authority.”

Radio Okapi station noted that the participants decided to support the 12 points to end the country’s crisis, proposed by Kabila in his address to the nation on May 23 of this year, and rejected the Court’s conviction against the former president, which they considered null and void.

They stated that the DRC is experiencing a multifaceted crisis due to political, economic, and social abuses, and accused the government of violating the Constitution, restricting democratic space, and instrumentalizing justice.

Held on October 14-15, the meeting concluded with a call for inclusive dialogue, supported by the National Episcopal Conference of the DRC (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in the Congo (CCC), in addition to demanding the withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries from Congolese territory.

The call to the conclave and the building of the platform could also generate conflicts between the DRC and Kenya, a country that, despite being one of the fundamental players in the peace processes promoted in the last few years, became the stage for establishing the Congo River Alliance (AFC) in December 2023, to which armed groups such as the March 23 Movement (M23) joined.
