Destruction of the electricity sector in Gaza denounced

Ramallah, October 19 (Prensa Latina) Damage to the electricity sector in Gaza Strip as a result of two years of Israeli attacks is estimated at approximately $728 million, a Palestinian source revealed.

Mohammed Thabet, spokesperson for the Electricity Distribution Company in the territory, denounced the serious losses due to the war and stated that the amount covers only the distribution sector and does not include losses in transmission and generation.

He made it clear that the loss estimates are preliminary because the company’s teams have not yet reached some of the so-called red zones to assess the damage.

In an interview with Safa news agency, the official specified that 80 percent of Gaza’s electricity distribution networks were completely destroyed, as well as more than 80 percent of the company’s vehicles and multipurpose machinery.

The army also destroyed 90 percent of the company’s warehouses and 70 percent of its remaining buildings and facilities, he said.

He revealed that 60 company employees and workers were killed and more than 100 technicians and engineers were injured.

Thabet detailed a recovery plan divided into three phases: the first, lasting two months, includes the rehabilitation of vital networks and the supply of power to shelters and humanitarian facilities, while the second and third will last six months and three years, respectively.
