Honduras’ capital remains on high alert due to rain

Tegucigalpa, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) The capital of Honduras will remain on red alert (emergency) today due to the torrential rains that have been battering the country for more than three weeks, with particular intensity in the Central American country's main city.

According to civil protection authorities, the maximum alert will remain in effect at least until Monday evening in the departments (regions) of Valle and Choluteca (south), as well as in the Central District, a municipality that includes Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, its twin city.

This warning level, decreed by the Secretariat of National Risk and Contingency Management (Copeco) in response to the rising waters of the Choluteca and Goascorán rivers, requires the implementation of evacuation plans in at-risk areas and the need to seek shelter in previously designated safe zones.

In addition, Copeco decided to maintain the yellow alert (vigilance) in seven departments in the center, west, and east; and a green alert (preventive) has been issued for three regions and eight municipalities in Cortes, Yoro, and Atlantida, in northern and Caribbean Honduras, due to rainfall.

The mayor of Tegucigalpa, Jorge Aldana, reported on the extent of the emergency due to forecasts of heavy showers and threats of landslides due to high levels of soil saturation.

In statements to the media, Aldana stated that the damage caused by the storm in the capital amounts to 850 million lempiras (approximately US$32.6 million).
