The document stated that the request is related to facilitating the work to restore external electricity to the nuclear plant, and was made to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
The Foreign Ministry stated that Ukrainian troops damaged on September 23 an electrical tower on the line that supplies electricity to the nuclear plant, causing a power outage. The plant’s workers had to activate emergency diesel generators.
The Foreign Ministry announced that after lengthy and complicated consultations, Ukraine was able to secure guarantees that it would not attack the nuclear plant. “Without these guarantees, it would be impossible to repair the damaged power lines,” it stated.
It emphasized that work to restore power to the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant began on October 18 and will take several days to complete.
The Zaporozhe Nuclear Power Station is the biggest plant in Europe, with six reactors and a total capacity of 6,000 megawatts.
