Legislator Jaime Estrada, of the opposition Revolucion Ciudadana party, announced the filing of a formal complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for the violations committed by security forces against protesters.
Estrada stated that, along with the complaint, they requested precautionary measures for the direct victims of the repression and asked the IACHR to establish an observation mission to verify the situation in the country.
“We hope that a monitoring process will begin regarding the rights violations that occurred during the protests,” the legislator stated.
The protests, called on by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), began on September 22nd in protest of the elimination of the diesel subsidy and lasted 31 days, centered in the province of Imbabura.
During the clashes between protesters and law enforcement, two Kichwa community members—Efrain Fuerez and Jose Guaman—were killed by gunfire allegedly fired by soldiers, and a 61-year-old woman was killed, allegedly by tear gas.
Human rights organizations reported around 300 injuries and more than 140 arrests, including twelve people prosecuted for terrorism.
