Costa Rica records 23,000 crimes against older adults

San Jose, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rica has accumulated 23,000 reports of crimes against older adults over the past three years, primarily sexual, psychological, and other types that affect their assets, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office says that the country is facing a sustained increase in abuses against this sector, which is growing year after year, added Marta Brenes, deputy lead jurist for the prosecutor’s offices that serve vulnerable populations, as cited by Teletica.com.

“We have an increasingly older adult population, which we must make visible and protect comprehensively, as there is legislation that protects them against psychological, physical, sexual, and property abuse, the latter being the most reported,” Brenes indicated.

Statistics from the Public Prosecutor’s Office point out that 7,900 complaints were reported in 2023; 8,458 in 2024; and, by August 2025, they exceeded 7,000. Through crimes such as theft, robbery, and fraud, including cyber-related fraud.

Prosecutor Brenes also highlighted—according to the television station—the emergence of new criminal offenses such as the crime of abandonment, introduced in 2024, after a significant increase in cases.
