Mexico highlights UN rejection of US blockade against Cuba

Mexico City, October 30 (Prensa Latina) Activist Ivon Guerra, a member of the board of directors of the Jose Marti Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, highlighted the rejection by 165 nations at the UN of the blockade imposed by the United States on the island.

“Despite the immense pressure exerted by the United States using undiplomatic methods, the US government could not prevent the condemnation by 165 countries of the world for this genocidal blockade that it illegally imposes on the Cuban people,” she told Prensa Latina.

She considered that Cuba “has won overwhelmingly” and “stands firm and resists.”

The vote, held annually since 1992 in the United Nations General Assembly, took place amidst a strong US pressure campaign on other countries to change their stance of support for the island nation.

On this occasion, 165 nations (including Mexico) voted in favor of eliminating the embargo, with seven votes against and 12 resoted to abstention.

According to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, speaking at the UN, the island will not surrender and will persist in denouncing the infamy and injustice of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington for more than six decades.

According to the most recent data, the embargo caused estimated losses of $7.5561 billion between March 2024 and February of this year, a 49 percent increase compared to the previous period.

Considered the main obstacle to Cuba’s development, this policy resulted in losses of almost $300 million in the health sector alone in one year, while the impact on the energy sector exceeded $496 million due to restrictions on importing fuel and spare parts.
