Panama: inspection of containers transiting through the country

Panama City, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) The Panamanian government established a system for verifying the cargo of containers entering or leaving the country to guarantee secure trade in the face of threats such as drug trafficking and organized crime.

According to the Cabinet Council agreement, the “Interinstitutional Coordination and Intergovernmental Assistance Program for Cargo Verification in the Territory” has been created for this purpose.

It was reported that under this new regulation, all containerized cargo entering, transiting, transshipping, or leaving the national territory may be verified using non-intrusive technology, including empty containers, when so determined, selectively or randomly.

For this process, selectivity criteria will be applied in accordance with international best practices in risk management and the regulatory provisions established by the National Customs Authority (ANA).

The report highlights that the National Customs Authority (ANA) will implement this program in coordination with other government entities involved in the entry, exit, or transit of goods through the national territory, or that, by virtue of their jurisdiction, have an interest in combating organized crime, terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, smuggling, and the consequences of such activity.
