Political observers believe the capture of El Fasher could be a prelude to further division in Sudan, given the paramilitaries’ known intentions to establish a parallel government there.

Meanwhile, Egypt and other nations are trying to coordinate efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Sudan following the fall of El Fasher and the massacres, and in light of the prevailing insecurity.

Since mid-April 2023, this African nation has been engulfed in civil war, following escalating power struggles between Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The fighting has already destroyed countless livelihoods, plunging the country into a complex spiral of hunger and death.
