According to a report by the Public Security Department of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, published on the website of the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the cities of Milan, Rome, and Florence registered the highest number of cases that year, accounting for 23,5% of the total.
Among the crimes, the most prevalent was theft, at 44%, with a 3,0% year-on-year increase, the report states.
It also specifies that burglaries increased by 4,9 percentage points, while vehicle thefts rose by 2,3 percentage points.
Robberies with violence rose 1,7% last year compared to 2023, while thefts increased by 0,6 percentage points.
Street crimes showed a rise of 1,8%, while drug-related crimes increased by 3,9 percentage points and sexual assaults experienced a rise of 7,5 percentage points.
There was also an increase in intentional injuries and property damage, of 5,8 and 1,6%, respectively, while the incidence of smuggling, arson, and cyber fraud decreased by 38,0, 5,3, and 6,5 percentage points, respectively, the source adds.
