Trial for repressors of the dictatorship in Uruguay

Montevideo, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) Nine retired Uruguayan military officers, accused of crimes against humanity, will go on trial starting today in Fray Bentos, capital of the Río Negro department, northwest of Montevideo.

They are charged with kidnapping and torturing some 30 people in the town of San Javier.

The alleged events occurred between 1980 and 1984, during the military dictatorship that ruled Uruguay between 1973 and 1985.

One of those kidnapped was the doctor Vladimir Roslik, who was tortured and murdered.

The case is being handled by the prosecutor for crimes against humanity, Ricardo Perciballe.

Several of the victims were minors at the time, between 16 and 17 years old.

The prosecutor is seeking prison sentences of between 11 and 15 years for the military officers, presenting some 70 pieces of evidence.
