FAO confirms famine in parts of Sudan

Rome, Nov 5 (Prensa Latina) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) indicated, in its latest analysis of food insecurity and malnutrition in Sudan, famine conditions in localities such as El Fasher and Kadugli.

A report presented by this international body, in conjunction with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), based on the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), confirms that hunger has worsened in the western regions of this African country.

The problem is particularly serious in North Darfur, South Darfur, West Kordofan, and South Kordofan, where armed conflict and severe access restrictions are causing a marked deterioration in hunger and malnutrition, the report points out, highlighting stark contrasts along the conflict lines.

Thus, in areas where violence subsided and humanitarian access and market recovery were possible, food security began to improve.

However, in the areas most affected by the fighting, virtually cut off from humanitarian assistance or under siege, famine spread.

The document, published this Wednesday by the FAO press office, calls for a cessation of hostilities in Sudan to enable “the safe, unimpeded, and sustained humanitarian access urgently needed to prevent further loss of life and protect livelihoods.”
