Haiti announces HPV vaccination campaign

Port-au-Prince, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Haiti's Minister of Public Health and Population, Bertrand Sinal, announced the launch of a vaccination campaign against the human papillomavirus (HPV) to prevent cervical cancer in the most vulnerable adolescent girls.

In this regard, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is working jointly with Haitian health authorities in the fight against this scourge.

PAHO/WHO donated 10 thermocoagulation devices to the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population to strengthen screening and treatment services for precancerous lesions in the Caribbean nation.

The devices offer an alternative to cryotherapy by replacing heavy containers that require compressed gas with portable, battery-powered tools.

This technology—reports the online newspaper Haiti Libre—allows patients to access treatment directly at primary healthcare centers, with a quick procedure lasting only a few minutes.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women in Haiti. Each year, approximately 588 women are diagnosed with the disease, and 439 die from it.

However, the source points out, most of these deaths could be prevented through early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions.
