FAO reports decline in global food prices

Rome, Nov 7 (Prensa Latina) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that the global food price index fell in October, below the level of the same month last year.

According to the report, published this Friday by the FAO press office, the index averaged 126,4 points in October, 1,6% lower than the previous month. This decrease was driven by a greater supply, primarily of cereals, whose prices fell by 1,3 percentage points month-on-month.

The analysis specifies that the wheat price index fell by 1,0%, while the coarse grains index dropped by 1,1 percentage points and the rice index fell by 2,5 percentage points.

On the other hand, the cost of meat showed a 2,0% reduction in the tenth month of this year compared to September, due to sharp drops in pork and poultry prices.

However, beef prices continued to rise, driven by higher Australian prices, as a result of strong global demand, the study notes.

The FAO also published updated forecasts for global cereal markets this Friday, indicating a 4,4% increase in production during 2025, reaching 2,99 billion tons, thus setting a new record.

The FAO’s updated forecast for global cereal trade in the 2025-2026 season points to a 3,2% increase, reaching 499,5 million tons.

International wheat trade is expected to grow strongly this year, driven primarily by increased imports from Asia, while a slight decline in global rice trade is anticipated, the source adds.
