Brazil: Trial against Bolsonaro’s son for coercion begins

Brasilia, Nov 14 (Prensa Latina) The first chamber of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) begins the trial against federal lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, for the crime of judicial coercion.

The proceedings will take place in a virtual plenary session and will continue until November 25.

If the STF accepts the charges brought by the Attorney General’s Office, the lawmaker, who has been in the United States since February, will be formally charged, and a criminal case will be opened against him for his actions in a foreign country.

The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office noted that the legislator sought sanctions on his country and Brazilian authorities to interfere in the legal proceedings regarding the attempted coup following the 2022 general elections and prevent his father’s conviction.

Finally, the far-right former president was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for five crimes. The first judge to vote was the rapporteur, Alexandre de Moraes. Justice Ministers Cristiano Zanin, Carmen Lucia Antunes, and Flavio Dino also formed part of the first panel, the same one that convicted Bolsonaro, except for Judge Luiz Fux, who was transferred to the STF’s second chamber.

All judges, except Fux, Andre Mendonca, and Kassio Nunes Marques, were sanctioned by the United States. The latter two were appointed by Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro’s son has repeatedly admitted in public to having orchestrated the sanctions on the Brazilian authorities.
