Damascus, Nov 14 (Prensa Latina) Two large Western companies are exploring possibilities of participation in the recovery of Syria’s electricity sector, as part of an ambitious project valued at seven billion dollars.

According to the reports, General Electric Vernova (GE) and Siemens Energy are in talks with the Syrian government about the possible supply of gas turbines for new power plants.

This follows the signing last May of an agreement for the construction of four combined-cycle power plants with a combined capacity of 4,000 megawatts, in addition to a 1,000 megawatt solar plant.

The sources specified that contracts could be awarded to any of the two companies, although they cautioned that it was still too early to set a date for their conclusion. Neither details of the specific budget for turbines nor estimates of the total amount of potential agreements were disclosed.

However, one of the parties consulted indicated that the talks could be extended to the provision of essential infrastructure for the national electricity grid.

In parallel to this progress, Syria signed a memorandum of understanding with the Emirati company Dana Gas to evaluate options for reactivation of gas fields in the center of the country.

The UAE-based entity explained that the agreement provides for a comprehensive technical assessment, which will include the Abu Rabah deposit, considered one of the largest discovered in the Arab nation. After the analysis, Dana Gas will present to the Syrian Oil Company (SPSC) a comprehensive development plan, conditional on satisfactory results and the achievement of a final agreement for the execution of operations.
