El Templete and a Tradition honor Havana on its 506th anniversary

Havana, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) Among the cultural events honoring the 506th anniversary of the founding of the former village of San Cristobal de La Habana (Havana) is the traditional walk around the trunk of the Ceiba tree at El Templete garden.

Located next to Plaza de Armas (Parade Ground) in Old Havana, the site awaits tonight the visit of those who admire the history and symbolism embodied in the building.

The commemorative remarks will be delivered by renowned poet and 2001 National Literature Prize winner, Nancy Morejon, followed by an artistic gala.

The Cuban encyclopedia EcuRed noted that El Templete, a building of significant historical importance, is one of the symbols of the oldest district of Cuba’s capital, declared a World Heritage Site in 1982 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

It added that the first mass was celebrated in 1519 under a Ceiba tree that stood on the site. The building was constructed in the 19th century next to the tree, which, with the passing of time, has been replaced by others.

Every November 15, El Templete becomes the focal point from which the city awaits and celebrates another anniversary of its founding.

The commemoration program invites this year to enjoy exhibitions, music, audiovisual screenings, lectures, workshops, and cultural activities for senior citizens, among other initiatives.

Entitled “Fidelity and Loyalty,” the promotional campaign pays tribute to Fidel Castro and Eusebio Leal, because the work of the Havana City Historian’s Office (OHCH) during the revolutionary period cannot be understood without acknowledging the close friendship and cooperation that existed between them.
